Barber Half Dollars - Designed by Mint Engraver Charles Barber, the Barber Half Dollar was created to replace the Seated Liberty design. Originally, a public contest was held for the creation of a new design, but this failed due to financial as well as artistic reasons; none of the designs submitted by the public were judged as worthy.
The Barber Half Dollars bear the exact same design as the Barber Quarters. Barber Halves are popular to collect as there are no cost-prohibitive rarities in the series. The Barber half dollar coins came at a time during which there was uncertainty with the future of design for U.S coinage and a new design was deeply sought to usher in a new era for coinage. These coins were used for a span of nearly 25 years, seeing important historical events such as the turn of the century and the beginning of World War I.
