Diwali Festival of Lights
What is Diwali?
Each year the “Festival of Lights” marks the Hindu New Year. During this time, people honor Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity, and welcome her into their homes by lighting colorful candles and lamps in hopes she will bring good luck and fortune. Diwali is one of the biggest and brightest festivals in India, traced back to 50-100 AD.
Diwali is also viewed as an auspicious time to invest. As the traditional Indian financial year draws to a close, many people consider Diwali investments to be lucky. Purchasing Gold as an investment and for gift giving is always well-received.
When is Diwali 2016?
Diwali begins on October 30, 2016. However, the Diwali celebration depends on the moon’s cycle in the Hindu lunar calendar and it’s difficult to know when Diwali 2016 starts. Known as Dhanteras, this first day is dedicated to celebrating prosperity with the exchange of Diwali gifts between family members and close friends. The festival lasts for five days, with the third day being the new moon day and the most significant day of the Diwali celebration. Diwali is in full swing by October 20, 2016, which is the main day of the Diwali celebration, and is marked with large fireworks displays and a special puja, or prayer.
