Mid-Day Gold & Silver Market Report – 4/17/2014

Gold prices are hovering around $1,300, as investors digest news coming out of Ukraine and balance that against stronger economic data coming out of the U.S. “Markets are on one hand expecting the U.S. economy to do better and are looking for higher Treasury yields down the road which are a negative [for gold],” Bart Melek, an analyst at TD Securities, said. “On the other hand, nobody wants to go into the weekend short with the Ukraine issue still very active.” “As the U.S. economy continues to recover, gold will remain under pressure,” Wang Xiaoli, chief investment strategist at CITICS Futures Co., said. “The situation in Ukraine just means there will be buyers when prices dip below $1,300.”

The Ukraine crisis is taking a turn for the worst as Russian President Vladimir Putin has invoked the “right to invade”. President Putin said in a statement today that he hopes he won’t have to send troops into Ukraine, while at the same time claiming the right to send troops across borders. “We definitely know that we should do everything to help these people defend their rights and define their destiny,” Putin said. “We will fight for this. The Federation Council gave the president the right to use military force in Ukraine. I hope very much that I don’t have to use this right.”
