Mid-Day Gold & Silver Market Report – 5/12/2014

Precious Metals have continued higher through afternoon trading, setting up what would be the end of a four session decline. News that Pro-Russian separatists declared victory in Sunday’s recession votes boosted Gold as investors consider rising tensions in the region and the fact that Western powers viewed the vote as illegitimate. In an email, Insignia Consultants chief market analyst Chintan Karnani said, “Investors are now asking themselves (a) what kind of new sanctions will be imposed on Russia (b) what will be effects of Russian counter retaliation (if any in future) on European economy [and] (c) how long will the Ukrainian crisis continue.”

U.S. Treasury prices fell Monday ahead of a week full of data that will be closely watched. Subdued demand for long bonds and an improving U.S. economy helped the yield curve steepen from five-year lows.  Sean Murphy, a Treasuries trader at Societe Generale in New York, said, “For the most part we saw a correction steeper after the refunding, but inflation continues to be tame and that puts a curb to some of the steepening that we're seeing.”

At 1 p.m. (ET), the APMEX Precious Metals spot prices were:
