OKLAHOMA CITY (January 11, 2021) – Legislation seeking coinage to recognize the centennial anniversary in 2021 of the transition from the Morgan to the Peace dollar has been signed by President Trump. The 1921 Silver Dollar Coin Anniversary Act will be enacted after being signed by the President on January 5, 2021.
H.R. 6192, was introduced in the House on March 11, 2020, by Representative Garland “Andy” Barr from Kentucky's 6th congressional district.
Section four of the bill lays out the design requirements:
Peace Dollar - The coins honoring the 100th anniversary of commencement of coinage of the Peace dollar shall have an obverse design and a reverse design that are renditions of the designs historically used on the obverse and reverse of the Peace dollar.
The designs for the coins will be selected by the Secretary after consultation with the Commission of Fine Arts and reviewed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.
The legislative initiative was championed by two longtime collectors, Thomas J. Uram, chairman of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC), and Mike Moran, another member of the CCAC.
Tom's numismatic interest started in 1971 when his Uncle Mitch introduced him to Gordon Doddrell of the Pittsburgh Coin Company. Tom joined the George Washington Numismatic Association at the same time and in several years was the first junior member to be elected to the board of directors as club secretary. In 1974, Tom joined the American Numismatic Association as a life member.
Mike Moran is an award-winning numismatic author, lecturer, and researcher. Mike authored a 450-page masterwork on the artistic collaboration between Theodore Roosevelt and Augustus Saint Gaudens that won the PNG's prestigious Robert Friedberg Award. He got his start in coin collecting from his grandfather in the 1950s.
U.S. Mint officials have indicated options would include issues struck at the Denver, Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints, though nothing official has been announced.
