APMEX.com Provides More Than 218,000 Meals for Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma
For the fifth year in a row, APMEX.com, a leading online Precious Metals retailer based in Oklahoma City, teamed up with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to fight hunger in the state. Through participation in the nonprofit’s annual Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers’ Food and Fund Drive, APMEX raised enough food and funds to provide more than 218,000 meals for Oklahomans who face hunger every day.
According to the Regional Food Bank, one in six Oklahomans has limited access to enough food to lead a healthy life, making Oklahoma one of the hungriest states in the nation. Last year, the Regional Food Bank distributed 50 million pounds of food to more than 1,250 community-based partner agencies in central and western Oklahoma.
APMEX Founder and President Scott Thomas knows what it means to struggle with inconsistent access to food. As a teen, Thomas worked at a pizza parlor and brought home leftovers for his family to eat. He believes no family should wonder where their next meal will come from.
“Helping provide meals to those who need them the most is very important to my family and I, and has become a mission of APMEX through donations and volunteering. This is our fifth year to host a weeklong food and fund drive and I enjoy seeing the high level of participation throughout the company. For anyone willing and able to help, whether through donations or physically volunteering at your local Food Bank, I invite everyone to participate and make a difference in your community,” Thomas said.
Every dollar donated to the Regional Food Bank provides four meals, meaning this year’s contribution of $54,474.53, plus the actual food donated, will help provide 218,120 meals for Oklahomans who need it most. APMEX held many different contests during the week to raise money, ranging from raffles to costume contests and silent auctions.
Since the first year APMEX participated in the Feeding Hope and Letter Carriers’ Food and Fund Drive in 2015, they have raised enough money to provide more than 1,149,000 total meals to the Regional Food Bank. It is something the employees look forward to each year, as dedication to each other, and commitment to the community, make up the backbone of APMEX.
Additionally, before the weeklong fundraising event, many APMEX employees volunteered Saturday, May 11, to help sort canned food and boxed items collected during the Letter Carriers’ Food Drive. On that day, the team was able to sort through 23,460 pounds of food, accounting for 19,550 meals.
“We are so grateful to APMEX and its employees for their dedication to helping fight hunger in Oklahoma,” said Katie Fitzgerald, CEO of the Regional Food Bank. “We love their passion for our mission and thanks to their hard work, thousands of meals will be provided to their neighbors in need of food assistance.”
