The history of the Australian Gold coins
First issued in 1986, these Australian coins featuring a Gold nugget design hit the market as a four-coin proof set containing coins ranging in size from 1/10 oz to 1 oz Gold coins. The 1986 Gold Nugget proof designs were used to produce a bullion version of the Gold coin the following year, and the reverse design was changed annually thereafter. In 1989, the Gold Nugget design was replaced by a depiction of a Red Kangaroo. Since that time, these Gold coins have featured a variety of marsupials, including the Common Wallaroo, the Nailtailed Wallaby and the Grey Kangaroo.
Why invest in the Australian Gold coins?
Investing in Australian Gold coins is considered by many to be a smart way to preserve wealth in the face of a weakening economy. The price of Gold historically remains stable even during economic downturns, and the Gold spot price often goes in the opposite direction of traditional investments such as stocks and bonds. 1 oz Gold Kangaroos have the added value of being numismatic or collectible, and they are also sovereign Gold coins guaranteed by the Australian government for weight and purity. When you buy these Gold coins, whether you get a Gold Nugget or Gold Kangaroo or a Gold coin featuring a wallaby, you are getting Gold bullion that has recognized value wherever you go.
What is the different between investing in Australian Gold coins and Gold bars?
Deciding to invest in Australian Gold coins or Gold bars really depends on your goals as an investor. Those who choose 1 oz Gold Kangaroos may do so because they prefer to have Gold that represents more than just physical Gold. Some prefer Gold coins, like Gold Nuggets, because the coins are aesthetically pleasing and have historical significance. While others prefer Gold bars over Gold Nuggets because Gold bars are more utilitarian, and can usually be acquired at a lower price point than Gold coins.
