This Gold Solidus was issued by the Byzantine Empire which formed out of the eastern half of the Roman Empire after the latters collapse. The name was derived from its capital city Byzantium, which later became Constantinople (modern day Istanbul).


Coin Highlights:
  • Struck during the reign of the Emperor Constans II (a nickname for Constantine), who was Byzantine Emperor from 641-668. He became consul in 642, which made him the last Roman emperor to become consul.
