MS-64+ NGC 1878 Morgan Dollar 7 TF Rev of 78
The Morgan Dollar gets its namesake from George T. Morgan, the famed coin designer. Morgan was an Englishman who came to the United States in 1876 to work for the U.S. Mint. He designed several coins, but the Morgan Dollar remains his most famous design. Morgan Dollars were minted at five different mints: Philadelphia, Denver, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City. The Morgan Dollar was minted from 1878 to 1904 and then again in 1921.
In 1918, Congress authorized the melting of Morgan Dollars and the production of a new Silver dollar coin, the Peace Dollar. The Morgan Dollar was minted again in 1921 to fill a shortage of Silver dollars. After that, Morgan Dollar production ended for good. Many Morgan Dollars were melted down over the years, so they are not as common as other coins. Morgan Dollars that were minted in Carson City are especially valuable because that mint produced relatively few Morgan Dollars compared to other mints. - Specifications
