1776 was a momentous year for the thirteen American Colonies. On July 4th of that year, delegates to the Continental Congress signed a Declaration of Independence, sending notice to England and the rest of the world that the Colonies would submit no longer to outside governance and interference. In recognition of the solidarity of the Colonies and their assumption of the right as a sovereign entity to coin their own monies, plans were made to issue a Silver Dollar. Patterns, using designs provided by Benjamin Franklin, were struck in Pewter, Brass, and Silver.
This 2 oz Silver round is the 1st release in the Colonial Tribute series. The Continental Dollar was originally minted in 1776 and the first pattern struck for the United States of America.
Round Highlights:
- Contains 2 oz of .999 fine Silver.
- Individual rounds come in protective packaging.
- Obverse: The outer rim encircled by dentils, surrounds the words “CONTINENTAL CURRENCY” above, and “1776” below. The inner circle contains the word “FUGIO,” and a popular motto of the time, “MIND YOUR BUSINESS,” with a illustration of the sun and a sundial.
- Reverse: The outer rim encircled with dentils, surrounding the thirteen original colonies listed within a chain, signifying the strength in unity. The inner circle contains the motto “WE ARE ONE,” surrounded by the words “AMERICAN CONGRESS.” The hallmark, “2 oz .999 Silver” is placed within the inner circles of the lower links of the chain.
