The Morgan Dollar holds a special place in U.S. coinage as it was the first coin to feature Lady Liberty with an American look, rather than the traditional Greek style. Her cap is adorned with wheat and cotton as a tribute to America's agricultural history.

The image of the eagle was also updated for the Morgan Dollar, showing a proportionally correct eagle with beautifully designed feathers. He carries an olive branch, showing America's desire for peace, and is perched atop a bundle of arrows, signifying America's readiness to defend her borders against attack.

The Morgan Dollar flooded the markets from 1878-1904. Nearly two decades after production halted, the Morgan Dollar was seen again for one year only, in 1921, due to a renewed desire for this iconic, beautiful design.

The history of Silver Morgan Dollars

The minting of Silver Morgan Dollars was a result of the Bland-Allison Act that reinstated Silver as legal tender in February 1878. Before 1878, production of Silver Dollars and other Silver coinage had been halted under the Coinage Act of 1873, and this left Gold as the standard economic unit of account. Silver coins had become devalued for multiple reasons, including the discovery of the largest Silver vein in world history. By 1878, Congress decided that U.S. coins should be both Silver and Gold, and therefore, Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase a fixed amount of each month to be minted into Silver coinage.

Why invest in Silver Morgan Dollars?

There are plenty of reasons to invest in Silver Morgan Dollars. Many people invest in Silver Dollars because Silver has long been considered a valuable asset, and these Silver coins have added numismatic and collectible value. Some of the U.S. coins are more rare than others, and their rarity also contributes to their value. The heavy Silver coins contain .7734 troy ounces of fine Silver, and they are legal tender Silver bullion backed by the U.S. government.

Collect Silver Morgan Dollars, coinage of the Wild, Wild West.

Silver Morgan Dollars were used at a time in U.S. history when a cowboy might have sauntered into a saloon and used one of the Silver coins to pay for his drink. Because these Silver Dollars were once circulated, imagining where the Silver coins could have been used and by whom is just part of the fun of owning them. Many who collect the Silver coins for their Wild West appeal, seek out Silver bullion minted by the U.S. Mint in Carson City, Nevada. These U.S. coins bear a “CC” mintmark, and are especially desirable because the Carson City mint had a much lower Silver Dollar mintage than the other four U.S. Mints.

Not the best but still nice

By  Doug

I got my 4th one in today it's not as nice as my last 3 but still a ok coin. It has some black and red marks on it with some light scratches and dings on the edges. I expected some light bag marks like my other 3. I guess that's the chance you take buying something you don't get to see first. I am new to coins but this won't discourage me from buying more. Half the fun in buying random years is you never know what you will get.

I like it!

I keep one of these on hand to compare with other Morgan dollars for sale. In my opinion, the quality and price cannot be beat. If you can find a better Morgan at a better price, buy it.

A very solid deal

While not every Morgan they have sent me has been strictly MS (one was a little scruffy and graded out at AU-55), most have been surprisingly nice, and one piece in particular, an 1885-O, is a stunning near-PL specimen worth considerably more than I paid for the coin and its TPG grading (MS-64). APMEX used to be a fine place for bullion but iffy on numismatics. That is steadily improving. I've been really happy with most everything lately, and in the couple of instances where I was disappointed the returns were easy and free.

Pros

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
