Read our customer reviews for testimonials about the quality and hear how some customers are receiving coins dating more than 100 years old. Before buying Gold Sovereign coins, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with how the price of Gold is determined. The price of Gold coins combines the Gold spot price, which is the base price for the unrefined Precious Metal, plus markups to cover the distribution, fabrication and nominal dealer fee, together called the premium. This combination represents the price of Gold bullion that you will pay. When you buy rare Gold coins, the premium price will also include a markup for any numismatic or collector value.

Collect Gold Sovereign coins that are known for their beautiful design.

Gold Sovereign coins underwent a few different design changes since their arrival in 1817. While the Gold coins have always featured the reigning monarch on the obverse, it is the reverse designed in 1817 by Italian engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci, which has garnered the most attention. The reverse of the Gold bullion featured Pistrucci’s rendition of St. George slaying the dragon, and it marked a dramatic change from the traditional imagery depicted on coins at the time. The British Royal Mint continued to use this reverse until 1825 at which point they decided to return to a more conventional coat of arms; however, the design made a comeback from 1871 to 1877, and again from 1893 to today.

The Great Britain Gold Sovereign was first minted in 1827 and remained in circulation until 1932 when Britain went off the Gold standard.

great buy

Cannot be happier with this purchase. I asked Apmex for an earlier date and they send me a 1912, close-to-mint-condition gold sovereign. IMO, George V is the handsomest on the obverse of such coins and to me 1912 has double significance: it is the last year of the Qing dynasty and the first year of the Republic of China. What a happy coincidence! All in all, very happy with this purchase and will definitely buy more in the future!

Great Britain Sovereign-Super Buy!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I bought 20 of these, expecting to get evenly worn G-VG quality coins. Instead I got a very nice variety spanning over a century of dates ranging mostly XF+ all the way to BU. Very, Very Pleased with this transaction. I am APMEX's newest fan. I am telling all my friends. There was a little dip in silver prices last week so I jumped in again and I just ordered 300 silver dollars and I can't wait to be pleasantly surprised again.

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Easy to Sell
  • Bottom Line
  • Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Pleasantly Surprised

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I'd read several reviews about luck of the draw coin condition, but decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I'm glad I did. My order arrived the next day (I didn't know APMEX was local to me). All of my coins were decent to better than average condition and varied years. I was pleasantly surprised and will definitely be getting more in the future.

Amazing value!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Jumped in and picked one of these up when APMEX was having a special on them. It was a great price and I would have been happy so long as it wasn't worn slick. Well, the mailman came today and delivered a brilliant, never touched, 2011 gold sovereign. Obviously this is just luck of the draw, but dang! So I just wanted to let prospective buyers know that these aren't all worn and dinged up. Definitely plan on getting another soon!

My monthly splurge!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I've been wanting to designate a small bit of my income to gold money to shore up against market calamities for a while now. This listing incited me to finally take the plunge and I am so glad I did. I am a huge British history buff and love antiques, so this combined with the fairly low over spot price was the perfect storm. The random element adds to the fun, and I was praying for a Victoria and lo and behold I got it in an 1871 with a middle-aged Vicky face. The condition is not flawless, a few slight pits and indentations on very close inspection, but the overall integrity is good and what you would expect from such an old coin and adds to the charm in my opinion. Maybe don't go with this if perfect condition is your priority. Very happy I get to have fun affordably investing in gold every month wondering what I will get next. Something I can hold in my hand and enjoy seeing accumulate in my a lockbox overtime.

  • Value (low premium over spot)
  • Attractive Design
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
