1881 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle MS-63 PCGS
The $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle was created after the discovery of vast amounts of Gold in California. Although this coin has no mint mark, it is assumed by most that these coins were minted in the San Francisco Mint. Liberty Gold Half Eagles were first minted in 1849 and then again from 1854 to 1907 with a final mintage in 1908 making the Liberty Gold Half Eagle a twenty-nine-year coin.
The Liberty Half Eagles were made up of 90% pure Gold and weighed 4.18 grams. They measured 17 mm in diameter and had a reeded edge. The Liberty $5 coins, like other Gold coins, was not meant to circulate instead it was minted as a bullion coin. This means that the Liberty Gold Half Eagle was not intended as currency but to store wealth in Gold.
