This BI Tetradrachm was minted in Alexandria, Egypt under the rule of Emperor Nero (reigned 54–68 AD), the last emperor of the Julio-Claudian dynasty.
Egypt, though a Roman province, retained a distinct currency system and minting tradition. Roman tetradrachms from Alexandria were made of billon (BI)—a debased silver alloy with a high bronze content—and were used primarily locally within Egypt. Nero’s reign is infamous for political purges, lavish building projects, and the Great Fire of Rome. But in Egypt, these coins served more than monetary use—they were also political tools showing the emperor's image and divine associations to reinforce Roman authority in a culturally rich and semi-autonomous province.
