A pattern coin is one that was struck at the Philadelphia Mint (with a few exceptions) for purposes of testing a design or concept, or perhaps from unusual die pairs, or in unusual metals, or to create delicacies for collectors, but which differs from normal circulation coins of standard design, date, and metal. As a rule, patterns are exceedingly rare coins.

William Barber designed the Gold and Silver coins in this so-called AMAZONIAN set and they are considered to be the most beautiful designs ever created for US coins. A Seated Liberty graces the obverse while an Eagle stands on the reverse. You may find members of this set in Gold, Silver, Aluminum and Copper. In 1890 when the famed Parmalee collection came up for sale, the name Amazonian was applied to these coins and that has survived more than 130 years of numismatic reference.
