The Japan Mint communicated an extraordinary high demand of the commemorative issues of the popular Emperor on the domestic Japanese market.

Don't miss the opportunity to own one of these beautiful and sought after Proof Gold 10,000 Yen coins celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Enthronement of Emperor Akihito!

2019 will also mark the end of the Heisei period, due to the abdication of His Majesty the Emperor. The period started on 8 January 1989, the day after the death of Emperor Hirohito.

The meaning of Heisei is intended to translate to 'peace everywhere'. Emperor Akihito was born in 1933 and acceded to the throne as the 125th Emperor of Japan on 7 January 1989.

The abdication is planned for 30 April 2019 and his son, His Imperial Highness, the Crown Prince Naruhito will immediately succeed the Chrysanthemum Throne on 1 May 2019. The ceremony of Enthronement is scheduled for 22 October 2019.

The Phoenix appeared on the Obverse of the Gold commemorative coins celebrating the Enthronement, as well as the 10th, 20th and now 30th anniversary of the Enthronement. Other than in western countries, where figures of Kings and Queens have often been depicted on coins, in Japan it is considered disrespectful to use the picture of the Emperor. This is why the Phoenix has been substituted to symbolize the Emperor.

Furthermore, each member of Japan's Imperial Family has a sign used to mark their belongings. For the current reigning Emperor the Paulowina and his spouse, Empress Michiko the White Birch.
