It is almost certain that the Annunciation, one of the greatest commissions received by El Greco in his whole career, formed part of the high altarpiece at Colegio de Dona Maria de Aragon, in Madrid. The work shows El Greco's most characteristic style at its height. In a markedly vertical format, the painting lenghtens the figures and draws on risky foreshortenings with no detriment to the excellent conception of the anatomies and the expression of movement. Endowing the painting with a clear upward direction joining the earthly to the heavenly, the artist breaks away from the traditional depiction of perspective and turns his space into something weightless and intangible. This, combined with the intense, contrasting coloring, the unreal, powerful light and the ease of the vibrant brush strokes, makes for an image of great expressive and spiritual force.
