The tenth coin in the celebrating Canada Fun series takes you to the tail end of the peak season for whale watching in Canada. Whether it’s a short trip or daylong adventure, whale watching is one activity that will leave you in awe.

Coin Highlights:

  • Contains 1/4 oz of .9999 fine Silver.
  • Comes in a mint-issued maroon clamshell box with a certificate of authenticity.
  • Obverse: Displays the likeness of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Reverse: The reverse design by Steve Hepburn re-creates the thrilling experience of witnessing a whale breaching in Canada’s coastal waters. In the foreground, a humpback whale suddenly lifts itself above the surface of the water, much to the delight of observers on board a whale watch boat in the background. The image is framed by stylized icons that represent popular outdoor activities and sights in Canada: (clockwise from top) Niagara Falls; a Christmas tree; a rodeo; wine tasting; dogsledding; folk music; cherry blossoms; maple syrup tasting; whale watching; tulips; coastal drives; and the aurora borealis.

The best time for whale watching in Canada? It depends on the species. On the Pacific coast, you'll have a higher chance of seeing orcas, gray whales and more between April and October. From May to October, you might spot species like the right, finback, minke and humpback whale in our Atlantic waters, or blue whales and belugas in the St. Lawrence. In the summer, you could also head north to the polar bear capital, Churchill, Manitoba, to see belugas.

If a whale lifts its tail out of the water and slaps it hard on the surface, that behavior is known as lobtailing. A vertical half rise of the head out of the water is known as spyhopping. And breaching is when the whale launches itself out of the water-as it does on this coin!

If you see a whale, give it space - it's the law. With a few exceptions, boats, kayakers and other mariners in Canadian waters must stay at least 100 meters away from most whales, porpoises and dolphins. That number jumps to 200 meters for orcas in the west, and 400 meters for endangered or threatened species in the St. Lawrence estuary. These measures help protect our marine mammals and minimize disturbances that could cause harm to these captivating creatures.
