The Wawel Dragon
The legend of the Wawel Dragon is a famous Polish folktale from Kraków. According to the story, a fearsome dragon once lived in a cave at the foot of Wawel Hill, terrorizing the city by demanding livestock and eventually human sacrifices. The king, desperate to save his people, promised his daughter’s hand in marriage to anyone who could defeat the dragon. Many brave knights tried and failed, but a clever shoemaker named Skuba devised a plan. He filled a lamb's skin with sulfur and left it for the dragon to eat. After consuming the bait, the dragon became so thirsty that it drank water from the Vistula River until it exploded. Skuba was hailed as a hero, and the city was saved. The dragon's cave under Wawel Castle remains a popular tourist site in Kraków today.
