The ship has become a cultural icon in the history of the United States.

Before its historic voyage to the New World in 1620, the Mayflower was first a merchant ship used to transport goods such as wine, hemp, salt and even hops to and from Europe.

Its design and structure made it ideal to carry the Puritans as its large castle-like structure protected its crew and the main deck from the treacherous and wavering elements.

Due to the design of the ship, which featured 30-foot high castle-like structure, it made it extremely difficult to sail against the North Atlantic winds and ultimately took over two months as a result. However, when sailing back it took half the time as the same winds blowing in the opposite direction.
