About Shawnee National Forest
The Shawnee National Forest is a United States National Forest located in the Ozark and Shawnee Hills of Southern Illinois, United States. Administered by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, it consists of approximately 280,000 acres of federally managed lands.

The Shawnee are Algonquian speaking people most closely related to the Sauk, Fox and Kickapoo of the Great lake region. The name Shawnee come from the Algonquian term “Shawunogi” meaning “People of the South”. At one time there were as many as 4,000 Shawnee living in the Midwest. However, by 1825 their numbers had been severely reduced due to hostilities between other Native American groups and Euro-American settlers.

The Shawnee lived in Southern Illinois only a short time. They lived near Shawneetown from 1746-1748 and at Fort Massac from June-October 1759. However, they were here long enough to lend their name to the area and the National Park.Camel Rock, located in the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area, is one of Illinois’ most photographed places. The name comes from the fact that the rocks look like a camel, of course.

Shawnee usually call themselves the Shawano, a name derived from a modified Menominee word "Sawanoh", which means south. The state of Illinois was named after the Illinois River. The river was named by French explorer Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle in 1679 after the Indians he found living along the banks. Illinois is the French spelling for the Native American word"iliniwok," meaning men or warriors.
