The Mercanti - Jimenez Collection
In the exciting world of numismatics, few names inspire as much admiration and excitement as those of John Mercanti and Joaquin Jimenez. The result of their collaboration on a single coin marks the start of a collection that perfectly embodies the longstanding Franco-American friendship.
Joaquin Jimenez head of the engraving workshop at Monnaie de Paris since 2008 and general engraver since 2020, is renowned worldwide for his original and elegant coin designs. France owes him many coins, francs and euros, including the recent national obverse of the €1 and €2, et 10, 20 and 50 cents.
John Mercanti joined the United States Mint in 1974. He officially held the position of Chief Engraver for one year, until his retirement in 2010. He is the employee who designed the most coins and medals in the history of the United States Mint, including the reverse of the famous American bullion: the American Silver Eagle.
Monnaie de Paris
Founded in 1864, not only is Monnaie de Paris France's longest standing institution, but it is also the oldest enterprise in the world. Today, the mint strikes circulation coins for France, as well as beautiful gold and silver commemorative coin programs that are each intricately designed works of art. The mint is also home to a museum that hosts exhibitions, tours and workshops as well as the Guy Savoy Restaurant.
This encounter between two general engravers in a joint project highlights national symbols. Each engraver interprets symbols of his counterpart's country with the Sower by John Mercanti and Lady Liberty by Joaquin Jimenez.
Coin Highlights:
- Contains 1 oz of .999 fine high relief silver.
- Mintage of 3,000 coins.
- Comes in a box and with a certificate of authenticity from the Monnaie de Paris.
- Obverse: The obverse of the coin depicts Lady Liberty, designed by Joaquin Jimenez, 27th general engraver of Monnaie de Paris. It is a clever blend of reinterpretation and preservation of codes. Like the original engraving, this Lady Liberty looks to the left, holds the American flag and is dressed in a loose-fitting dress. Joaquin adds his touch by giving her a proud, determined expression, with an eagle flying above. She holds her flag by the tips of her arms and looks liberated, an effect accentuated by the Statue of Liberty crown on her head. A multitude of stars criss-cross in the background, blending into one another illustrating the union of the American states.
- Reverse: The reverse of the collection was designed by John Mercanti, 12th Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. The Sower is standing in front of the French flag, gazing toward the "RF" acronym to her right. Her attitude is calm and her bag of seeds has been transformed into a bowl. The fruit of her sowing is symbolized by the ears of wheat growing beside her, as if the cultural and economic influence of France represented by the seeds she sowed had born fruits. The face value and the hallmarks are inscribed on a platform, similar to the one on which the original Lady Liberty sets her foot, and the year-date is located just above.
- Certified by the Monnaie de Paris.
