Pandas
The giant panda, sometimes referred to as the panda bear or simply panda, is a bear species found in south central China. It is known for the striking black patches that appear around its eyes, across its ears, and along its rounded body. The name 'giant panda' is used to differentiate it from the red panda, which is not closely related. Despite belonging to the Carnivora order, the giant panda eats bamboo almost exclusively. Occasionally, it may also eat other grasses, wild roots, or small animals such as birds, rodents, or carrion.
The giant panda inhabits isolated mountain ranges in central China, mostly in Sichuan, with smaller populations in Shaanxi and Gansu. Over time, farming, deforestation, and human development have forced pandas out of the lowland regions they once occupied.
Though the dragon is traditionally seen as China's national emblem, the giant panda is just as prominent around the world. Today, it is often used to represent China in international settings.
For many, the panda is one of the first things associated with China. It is viewed as a symbol of peace and friendship within Chinese culture. Pandas have held a notable place in China’s past. In the Xizhou Dynasty, they were described as mighty animals, strong as tigers. Panda pelts were once presented to rulers as tokens of honor and tribute.
During the Ming Dynasty, pandas were believed to possess healing powers. Their pelts were thought to protect against disease and help prevent tumors.
