Perth Gold Double Phoenix
This gold coin from The Perth Mint's Chinese Myths and Legends series for 2025 features the Double Phoenix.

The Chinese myth of the Double Phoenix—often referred to as "Fenghuang" when discussing a single phoenix—centers around themes of harmony, prosperity, and the union of opposites. In Chinese mythology, the Fenghuang is a mythical bird that embodies both yin and yang, often mistaken as a single creature but sometimes depicted as a pair of male and female phoenixes representing the ultimate balance in nature and society.

When shown as a double phoenix, the image symbolizes marital harmony, love, and fidelity. This motif is commonly used in weddings, where the phoenix is paired with the dragon (representing the emperor or masculine power) or with another phoenix (symbolizing the empress or feminine virtue). The male phoenix is called Feng, and the female is Huang, and together they represent a perfect, balanced partnership.

In broader symbolism, the Double Phoenix also signifies rebirth and renewal, rising from ashes much like the Western phoenix, though the Chinese version is more elegant and peace-loving. The bird is said to appear only in times of peace and prosperity, often associated with the reign of a just and benevolent ruler.

Thus, the myth of the Double Phoenix reflects Chinese cultural ideals of balance, unity, prosperity, and virtuous leadership, making it one of the most cherished symbols in Chinese art and folklore.
