This first year of the V Nickel did not include the word "Cents" on the obverse, which led to gold plating and passing these off as $5 gold pieces. Unscrupulous people were able trick the average person due to the lack of central communication from the government, and this especially happened in remote areas during westward expansion. The most famous example of this was from a deaf-mute in Boston, Josh Tatum, buying 5 cent items with his gold-plated V Nickel, and receiving $4.95 back in change. This coined the term "Are you Joshing me?" that we use today.
