  • Product Details
Nearly mint state and white, this coin is a great example of the first year No "Cents" type housed in a PCGS holder.
    Coin Highlights:
    • One-year type with no "Cents" on the reverse.
    • Comes in protective packaging.
    • Designed by Charles Barber.
    • Obverse: Depicts a representation of Liberty wearing a crown.
    • Reverse: Features a "V," the Roman numeral for five, encompassed by the legend and "E Pluribus Unum."

Protect and display your coin by adding a plastic capsule to your order.

This first year of the V Nickel did not include the word "Cents" on the obverse, which led to gold plating and passing these off as $5 gold pieces. Unscrupulous people were able trick the average person due to the lack of central communication from the government, and this especially happened in remote areas during westward expansion. The most famous example of this was from a deaf-mute in Boston, Josh Tatum, buying 5 cent items with his gold-plated V Nickel, and receiving $4.95 back in change. This coined the term "Are you Joshing me?" that we use today.
