Would have rated it a 5, BUT......round came with a visible hair line scratch on the APMEX logo mirrored finish side. Otherwise, it is a very nice round and good value over spot price.

Clean Gold Round

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

This round is a beautiful piece of gold. I have a 1/4 ounce gold coin, and it's very nice, but this 1/2 ounce round just seems so much more impressive. It's design is sharp and the round is flawless. It shipped quickly and came in a plastic sleeve. I am very pleased with the gold round and with APMEX.

It's gold.

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I just picked up my 6th Apmex half ounce gold round. I can't quite purchase an entire ounce when the price opportunity arises. You pay a slightly higher premium with this over a 1oz generic bar. However, this has given me dollar cost averaging power. For example, last one I bought, I picked up when gold was $1320. I got this one when gold hit $1165. When differences like that pop up, the $160 price swing will pay for the little extra margin and shipping. Comes in a sealed flip and is very cool to hold in your hands.

Perfect Size

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I really like the size on this round. When comparing to the one ounce bars I own, it just looks like it's more than a half ounce. Just a good balance of making it thick enough to feel substantial, but thin enough to give you some width and make it look like something. While I know the scale is the important measure, I just get a good feeling from this round.

Great Product & Price!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Why did you buy this product? I wanted to put a portion of my portfolio into gold and silver to preserve my wealth, not to invest. The U.S. government, and many other national governments, have inflated their currencies to reduce the impact of the global economic credit crash, to pay for wars, and debt in general. When they do this the value of the dollar drops, and therefore dollars in the bank is a fools place to save wealth in the long term, unless you have been earning 21% interest annually to keep up with inflation. From 2000 to now(2014) the dollar has lost 66% of its value compared to oil (fuel) and gold (money). In comparison, oil and gold cost 3 times more in dollars than they did in 2000. Oil $35/barrel Gold 400/oz in 2000, Oil $100/barrel Gold $1300/oz in 2014. For your dollars in the bank to keep up with inflation for the past 14 years you would have to earn aprox. 21% annual interest! Do the math. This is why they buy a lot of gold in India. They have inflation problems. I don't know about you but my bank only offers 0.30% annual interest in a savings account, unless I get a CD and that only gives 1-2% annually! My grandfather didn't have to worry about his money in the bank in the 1950's because it was 40% backed by gold. And my great grandfather didn't have to worry about it either because in 1900 it was 100% backed by gold. This all changed when we this country went off the gold standard in the 70's. So it's good to have some real money right now, and anytime. What about stocks or a 401k? Well, just look up a 100 year chart of the Dow Jones Industrial Average divided by the price of Gold (a.k.a Dow/Gold Ratio) and you can see that most stocks are not fairing well... I also bought this product because it can be held, it is real, compared to an ETF which is someone's liability, and may only be backed by only a percentage of the real metal. Also, historically since 1920 with the beginning of the automobile and the gas engine, a oz of gold has bought 11-14 barrels of oil, on average. So right now the price is fair, compared to 2011 when it was 18 barrels… I bought 6/7 gold 1/7 silver in value, because historically gold has been more stable than silver. Things that are great about it? These rounds are reeded, have highly reflective surfaces & frosted surfaces, crisp lettering & design. This quality design makes them look official. The rounds clearly state "the 4 key points"- What metal the round is made of, the exact purity of the metal, the weight, and who made it. This makes them very liquid. In contrast, US Eagle coins fail to state their exact purity, by only stating "Fine Gold" or "Fine Silver". The Apmex rounds are 99.9+% pure, which is investment grade, because it does not need to be further refined, it is easier to recognize visually by the rich pure color of the metal, and it is simply just more desirable. In contrast, US Gold Eagle coins are only 91.66% pure. They're Economical. Apmex 1oz silver rounds cost only 10% over spot and 1/2oz gold rounds cost only 5% over spot. In contrast, US Eagle coins cost twice these premiums. I don't like US Eagle coins, I like Apmex rounds. Apmex has rightly not placed a dollar value on their rounds. It makes the round look honest, and the people who made it smart. US Eagle coins have a dollar face value not even closely related to the real metal value. It makes the coin look fraudulent, and the people who made it stupid... US eagle bullion coins also display the Roman deity of libery "Libertas" which I find rather weird and wrong in principle, especially on our national bullion coins when we are a nation of religious freedom. I know "lady liberty" is supposed to be emblematic of liberty, but I don't want any man-made god on my precious metals. Apmex has only put their patriotic eagle logo on their rounds. I feel the eagle, a living creature, is very emblematic of liberty and freedom, while still honoring the Creator.
