Product DetailsLow population of just 710 coins graded MS-69 Deep Mirror Prooflike by PCGS! Additionally, this label has been hand signed by John Mercanti, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint at the time that the America the Beautiful series was launched.
This is the first America the Beautiful release of 2012 and the 11th overall in the series. This coin honors Puerto Rico's beautiful El Yunque National Forest, which is the only tropical rainforest in the United States Forest System. The forest was originally protected by King Alfonso XII of Spain, which makes it one of the oldest protected areas in the West. Under the name Luquillo Forest Reserve, it was established on Jan. 17, 1903. Today, more than 200 species of trees and plants, including 23 indigenous species, thrive in the forest's 28,000 acres.
The coin's reverse depicts a Coqui Tree Frog and a Puerto Rican Parrot with tropical foliage in the background. The Puerto Rican Parrot is an endangered species unique to Puerto Rico.
