In one of the most exciting and significant developments in Canadian numismatics, the RCM recently began selling 30,000 early 20th century Gold coins that had been in Bank of Canada storage vaults for decades. The 30,000 coins are from a hoard of 300,000 $5 and $10 denomination coins dated 1912, 1913 and 1914, the first years of Canadian government Gold coinage. The remaining 270,000 Gold pieces in the hoard have been melted.

Nice Piece of Canadian History

By  $$ Guy

from N. Cal

Thank you Canada for selling these from the gold reserve & destroying the great majority of those minted. I ordered the 1914 in MS64 & the 1913 in MS63 with the PCGS holder to tie them to the Canadian gold reserve. The MS63 1913 coin I received was as nice as the MS64. Buying these 100 + year old coins with almost a 1/2 oz of gold when there are a bunch on the market seems like a good move for me. I think they have a lot more potential in the future than the modern bullion coins I own.

  • Collectible (lower mintage)
