In 1907, Augustus Saint-Gaudens redesigned the $20 Gold piece creating the ever so popular $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. The initial Saint-Gaudens double eagle was struck in high relief giving he coin an almost sculpted appearance. The date was expressed in roman numerals "MCMVII". About 11,250 coins of these coins were stuck in high relief after which the design was modified to a shallow format to allow bulk production on a high speed coinage press.
