Britannia, the female personification of the British Isles, takes her name from an ancient term for Great Britain and has been a popular figure since the 1st century, when she was first depicted on Roman coinage under the rule of Emperor Hadrian. Illustrated as a goddess, Britannia resembles the Roman figure Boudica. Britannia first appeared on British coins in 1672, when she graced the farthing. She was a firm fixture on coins from this point onwards, appearing on pennies issued under every monarch from 1797 until decimalization, when she was chosen to appear on the 50 pence coin until 2008.

Over the years, the image of Britannia has altered slightly, with her maritime links being emphasized by switching her spear to a trident. Britannia is seen as a symbol of British unity, liberty and strength, meaning she resurfaces during particularly challenging times. Like Columbia in the U.S. and Marianne in France, Britannia becomes more prominent in times of war or when national pride is booming.

In 1987, Britannia’s image graced the new Gold bullion coin minted by the Royal Mint known as the Gold Britannia. These Gold coins have since grown in popularity as an investment and a collector’s piece. Gold Britannias are available in sizes as small as 1/20 oz and as large as 5 oz Gold coins. In 1997, the Royal Mint expanded this design to a Silver bullion coin known as the Silver Britannia. Over time, both the Gold Britannia and Silver Britannia have experienced changes in design and an increase in metal purity, making them major players in the modern coin market.

nice but problems

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I love the design and the low mintage but am a little disappointed in the condition. I expect better from the RCM. APMEX was sterling about it and did exchange my coins for different ones but still these are not a set I can send in to be graded for a PR70. Still beautiful though.

Beautiful Britannia Silver Proof/Reverse set for 2016

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

I purchased (2) of the Britannia Proof/Reverse Proofs: a special minting by the Royal Mint for APMEX. Great idea - the 2016 proof Britannia is exception in design and minting and lent itself well to a reverse proof. The new design made the purchase far easier; earlier year proofs have been far less iimpressive. My only complaint was the price. I purchased one set probably the same day the set was first advertised on APMEX. Several days later, I decided to buy a second set, except the price was $40 higher IN JUST A COUPLE DAYS. APMEX is known for that - but Roit still irks me.

Merchant response: Prices of low mintage items such as these can be affected by factors such as supply and demand, availability, etc. Value isn't always tied to the market activity alone.

Reverse Proof coin has a problem

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Just 500 of Reverse Proof coins. Sound great. But when I received this set I found small milk spot on Reverse proof coin. 10 days later whole coin was covered by milk spots. I returned coins to Apmex.

  • Pros
  • Collectible (lower mintage)
  • Cons
  • Poor Condition

Merchant response: Product was returned to APMEX, per customer satisfaction guarantee.

Usually don't spend this much per oz but...

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

This is something that I don't usually purchase. At over $100 an oz this product is not great for value. The coins though are beautiful, and flawless. Inspecting under a microscope I found no flaws in strike, or any imperfections. The only reason it is not 5 stars is price, and the box the product came in was cheap shiny plastic, that smelled funny.

Rarest Silver Proof Britannia EVER!!!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

These Britannias have a huge following already both in the UK and the US - that was when the mintage was around 5,000 - 10,000 silver proofs a year. This is bound to be a collector's favourite for years to come with only 500 of the reverse frosted coin minted - plus they are very pleasing on the eye. VERY HAPPY to have secured a set!! Thanks!

Proof quality, need a better quality box

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Great collectors item. Will be gifting this to a friend whose son has developed an interest in coin collecting. The only complaint I have is the box and internal foam/glue. It has a strong chemical smell which I aired out over several days. Considering the proof quality, I hope APMEX uses cases not made in China in the future.

Very Nice Set!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

These coins are Beautiful and I can't believe they are still available. That won't last long! It seems there is confusion surrounding these Apmex sets sometimes but this one is very clear. There will only be 500 of these 2016 Reverse Proofs ever made WORLDWIDE and I got number 44. Are you kidding me? I am thrilled!

Solid Product!

Was this review helpful? Yes/ No

Absolutely admire the design of these two coins. Proof has one minor blemish on reverse, most likely resulting in a grade of PF69. Reverse proof appears to be blemish free and I am hoping for a grade of PF70. All in all, these two coins are an exceptional value and with strong eye-appeal. I am very pleased with my purchase and will continue to buy from APMEX; wonderful people and excellent customer service.
