Following a suspended mintage of quarter coinage after 1807, the quarter was again produced in 1815. During the time of mintage in 1815 the Capped Bust style was introduced. The designs are similar to that found on other Silver coinage of this period. This design was particularly first seen on the 1807 half dollar.

Lady Liberty is facing left on the coin, wearing the cloth Liberty Cap, hence the name Capped Bust. her neckline is draped in cloth and is secured by a clasp at her shoulder. The coin has seven stars on the left, and only 6 on the right.

After a two years lapse, beginning in 1829, coinage of the quarter dollar resumed two years later. Implemented was a revision of John Reich's Capped Bust style introduced in 1815. The 1831 through the 1838 version is somewhat smaller in diameter and has restyled features, stars, letters and numerals, giving the piece a more cameo-like appearance. Also, removed from the reverse, was the E PLURIBUS UNUM motto.
