Seated Liberty Half Dollars (1839-1891)

Seated Liberty Half Dollars (1839-1891)

The Seated Liberty Half Dollar, or Seated Half Dollar, was the third variety of half dollar minted in the United States. Introduced in 1839, the coin was different from the Bust Half Dollar that came before. The general public immediately embraced the coin’s artwork, which helps explain why it remained in production into the late 1800s.

Contemporary collectors prize these coins for their rarity. Seated Liberty Half Dollars are out there, but it is difficult to find them in the excellent condition favored by collectors.

Value of a Seated Liberty Half Dollar

The premium on a given Seated Liberty Half Dollar depends on a few factors. Most importantly, the condition of the coin affects its value. Everyone wants to add well-preserved coins to their collection, but the fact is there are more Seated Half Dollars in Poor condition than Fine condition. Next, the year of mintage plays a role in determining value.

Seated Half Dollars produced during or around the Civil War command higher prices than coins struck during less turbulent periods of American history. The cost of Seated Half Dollars ranges from as low as $20 to as high as $1,000. Of course, the coins that sell for $1,000 and upwards are exceptional coins — those from particularly desirable editions that also display excellent condition.

Sought After Seated Liberty Half Dollars

The most sought-after Seated Half Dollars are, naturally, those that have been perfectly preserved. Pristine coins are difficult to find simply because Seated Half Dollars were widely circulated for a long time. Seated Liberty Half Dollars were produced for more than 50 years. Enough were minted that the coins themselves are not difficult to find, but they were so useful in general circulation that they are now extremely difficult to find in coveted pristine condition.

The search for a well-preserved Seated Half Dollar is like searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Further, Half Dollars that were produced in and around the years of the Civil War are especially alluring to collectors. They represent an important era in American history and many collectors view owning a Seated Liberty Half Dollar from that period as owning a piece of history.

Future Value of the Seated Liberty Half Dollar

The future value of a given Seated Half Dollar is not something we can predict with any degree of certainty. However, experts generally agree these coins should see long-term growth due to increasing rarity. Wartime Seated Liberty Half Dollars will be harder to come by with the passage of time. Now is the time to acquire an important piece of our nation’s history with a Seated Liberty Half Dollar.
