V-Nickels

V Nickel (1883-1913)

The Liberty Head Nickel, also called the V Nickel, takes its nickname from the coin’s reverse design showing a large Roman numeral indicating its face value. These five-cent pieces were minted from 1883 to 1913.

Like other coin types, V Nickel values can vary significantly based on year of mintage and condition. Pre-1897 V Nickels can be valued around $5 while a rare 1885 V Nickel may command a premium of nearly $400.

The Value of V Nickels

The value of a V Nickel depends largely on its scarcity and date. An 1889 V Nickel in Good condition may be valued around $10 while an 1885 V Nickel in Uncirculated condition could fetch more than $1,500 on the open market. If you have a V Nickel from a limited series or if you have a V Nickel that appears to be in excellent condition, you might consider having it graded by a professional at a reputable grading service like PCGS or NGC.

When you have a coin graded by a professional numismatist, you will get a much better idea as to what dealers and collectors might be willing to pay for your coin, should you wish to sell. Coin graders not only put your coin through an exacting process to determine its overall condition but will also verify the coin’s authenticity.

V Nickel Value and Condition

To get an idea of what condition your V Nickel might be in, you must closely examine the coin and its details. One easy way to begin this process is by carefully observing the stars around the coin’s outer edge. If the coins are significantly worn, then your coin is probably in Good condition. If the stars have good texture with minimal wear, then your coin may be graded Fine.

If the stars are crisp with no sign of damage, your coin may be in Extremely Fine condition. While the stars are a good starting point, you must also closely examine other coin details, such as the date or “V” with the same careful attention.

Your V Nickel Could Be Rare

The 1885 V Nickel is most coveted by dealers and collectors. This elusive coin is considered extremely difficult to find. Even with considerable wear, an 1885 V Nickel can command a large premium and may be worth nearly $400. If you have one in pristine condition, its potential value could be as much as $2,000. The 1886 edition is desirable to dealers and collectors as well. If you have one in Fine condition, it could sell for more than $200. The 1912 V Nickel is also quite popular. Coins minted in San Francisco are especially sought after by both dealers and collectors; use a magnifying glass to check the coin’s mintmark. A 1912-S V Nickel in Good condition may fetch at least $100. Several editions of the V Nickel have rare types that are very collectible. Check all of your V Nickels carefully!

V Nickel Values’ Growth Potential

A V Nickel makes a great addition to any coin collection and also makes a strong starting point for new collectors. These coins have not been minted in more than 100 years and there are fewer of them available with each passing year. Some V Nickels can be purchased for extremely low price points, making them an affordable option for any collector.
