Product Details

Mintage of only 5,000 coins!
New Zealand Mint is proud to announce this coin issue celebrating the first space walk as part of the Conquest of Space series. Alexei Leonov was one of the twenty Soviet Air Force pilots selected to be part of the first cosmonaut group in 1960. He was outside the Voshod 2 spacecraft for 12 minutes and 9 seconds on 18 March 1965, connected to the craft by a 5.35 metre thether.

With permission from Alexei Leonov presented on this coin in magnificent color is a reproduction of his original painting that illustrated this historic achievement. Engraved in 3D relief is the space ship Voskhod 2 with Leonov walking in space connected by a 5.35 metre tether. The coin is presented in a fold out picture with box and certificate of authenticity.
