This coin went down with the SS New York more than 160 years ago in the Gulf of Mexico. The SS New York was carrying a large load of silver and gold coins minted from a variety of Mints including Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans when on September 7, 1846 it went head on into a hurricane. Out of the 53 passengers and crew on board, only 36 members survived. However, thousands of dollars worth of gold, silver, and paper money were also lost to the sea until 2007 when they were finally brought to the surface by amateurs looking for the wreck. A Louisiana oil field worker and an amateur diver read a news article about the ship and decided to start looking for it. With the cooperation of shrimpers, who always avoided the area due to their nets getting tangled with the mass below, and the oil field workers use of his electronic fish finder, he and his diving buddy were able to locate the ship and begin proceedings to secure the rights to its contents and begin excavating its contents.
This coin has obvious evidence of being under seawater for over 160 years. This coin, graded by NGC, was given the designation "Shipwreck Effect" instead of a grade due to the etching of the seawater which has impaired the coin. Its obverse is fully recognizable as a seated liberty half dollar, while its reverse is not so lucky. The outline of the eagle can be clearly seen, as well as the mint mark, but the rest has virtually no detail. This coin is still an amazing find and an amazing and integral part of American history. This coin is sure to please any coin collector or historian who values and appreciates the history and stories behind a coin.
