This coin is one of a series of coins devoted to the wildly popular BBC television series "Doctor Who."

The Ninth Doctor:
The sole survivor of the Last Great Time War, scarred by the terrible things he’d seen and done, the Ninth Doctor was an intense and emotional incarnation. Hiding his psychological trauma behind madcap wit and frivolity, he took Rose Tyler to see the end of the world, inspired Charles Dickens and showed that for once, everybody could live. He was still capable of great cruelty and anger though, killing Cassandra and torturing a lone Dalek into submission. After Rose defeated the Daleks using the power of the time vortex, the Doctor saved her by transferring that dangerous power into his own body.

The Coin:
The reverse shows Christopher Eccleston looking onward, the grotesque nemesis behind him. The floating tardis in the bottom and the galaxy behind him inspires a sense of technology and time travel. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Series:
Doctor Who is currently the longest running and most successful science fiction television series of all time. Produced in Great Britain by the BBC, the program depicts the adventures of a time traveling alien known as the Doctor. He explores the universe in his TARDIS, a telepathic travel machine that’s bigger on the inside than the outside, and outwardly appears to be a blue 1960s British police box. Along with a succession of companions, the Doctor faces a variety of foes while working to save civilizations, help those with whom he came in contact with, and right wrongs across the universe. Doctor Who first aired in November 1963, and to date the lead role has been played by eleven different actors. The program has received recognition from critics and the public as being one of the finest British television series ever produced and is aired around the globe.
