Why Buy American Gold Eagle Coin Sets from APMEX?

If you are looking to start or expand your American Gold Eagle collection, here are some benefits to purchasing American Gold Eagle coin sets:

  • Gold Value: One of the primary benefits of purchasing American Gold Eagle coin sets is the gold value of the coins. As the coins are made of 22-karat gold, they offer a valuable investment opportunity for those looking to invest in physical gold. Because of this alloy, Gold Eagles are more durable than 24-karat gold coins like Gold Buffalos.
  • Liquidity: American Gold Eagle coin sets are highly liquid, meaning they can be easily bought and sold in the market. This makes them a popular choice among investors and collectors.
  • Portfolio diversification: Adding American Gold Eagle coin sets to an investment portfolio can help diversify the portfolio and spread risk across different asset classes. As gold has historically been a reliable store of value and has been used as a hedge against inflation, it can be an effective way to diversify a portfolio.
  • Collectibility: American Gold Eagle coin sets can also be appealing to collectors. The coins have a unique design and are produced in limited quantities each year, making them a valuable addition to a coin collection.
  • Tax advantages: In the United States, American Gold Eagle coins are considered collectibles, and as such, are subject to a lower capital gains tax rate than other investments such as stocks or bonds. This can provide a tax advantage to investors who hold the coins for more than one year and then sell them at a profit.

It's important to note that while American Gold Eagle coin sets offer many benefits and, just like with any other gold investment, they depend on the price of gold. It's always a good idea to do your research and consult with a financial advisor before making any investment decisions.

American Gold Eagle Coin Sets

The American Gold Eagle is a series of gold bullion coins produced by the United States Mint. Here's a brief history of the series:

  • In 1982, Congress authorized the production of gold bullion coins to compete with other world bullion coins. The United States Mint was tasked with creating a design and producing the coins.
  • The first American Gold Eagle coins were released in 1986. The coins featured the iconic design of Lady Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens on the obverse (front) and a family of eagles designed by Miley Busiek on the reverse (back). The coins were minted in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz.
  • In 2006, the United States Mint began producing a special uncirculated version of the American Gold Eagle. These coins are similar to the proof coins but have a matte finish and are not struck as many times, resulting in a less mirrored surface.
  • In 2021, to celebrate 35 years of this iconic series, a reverse design change was introduced. This design change marked the first and only change to the series since its initial release.

Type 1 vs Type & 2 American Gold Eagles

The original Type 1 designs on the American Gold Eagle coin are classic and widely recognized designs featuring a rendition of Lady Liberty, created by the renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.

Saint-Gaudens, who was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1905 to redesign the country's coinage, originally created this design for the $20 Double Eagle gold coin. However, due to Saint-Gaudens' untimely death in 1907, the design was not completed until 1908, and the coin was not issued until 1909.

The obverse of the American Gold Eagle features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty, holding an olive branch and a torch, walking confidently towards the viewer with the sun's rays in the background. The design is symbolic of America's ideals of freedom and opportunity and is considered one of the most beautiful designs in American coinage.

From 1986 until 2021, the reverse of the coin, which was designed by artist Miley Busiek, features a family of eagles in their natural habitat. A male eagle is shown flying above the nest, while a female eagle is depicted in the nest with her young hatchlings. The design is meant to represent American family values and the strength and beauty of the American bald eagle.

In 2021, the United States Mint introduced a new design for the Type 2 reverse (back) of the American Gold Eagle. The design changes were made to celebrate the 35th anniversary of both the American Gold Eagle and American Silver Eagle programs.

The design depicts a close-up image of a bald eagle's head, looking to the right, with its beak open as if it's about to let out a cry. The eagle is surrounded by inscriptions of the coin's weight and denomination, as well as the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM".

The new design was created by Jennie Norris, a U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program artist. It marks the first time the design of the American Gold Eagle has been changed since the series was introduced in 1986.

The obverse (front) of the coin still features the classic design of Lady Liberty by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which has been used on the American Gold Eagle since its inception.
