About The Royal Canadian Mint

For the first 50 years of Canadian coinage, all currency was struck at the Royal Mint. Once it became apparent that Canada was becoming a country in its own right, The Royal Canadian Mint was established in Ottawa in 1901. This new branch of the Royal Mint was solely responsible for the production of Canadian coins.

The first coins struck by the Royal Canadian Mint were a series of bronze cents and silver 5-cent pieces. In 1908, the mint introduced gold $10 and $20 coins, which featured the image of King Edward VII on one side and a maple leaf on the other. The maple leaf would eventually become the main symbol on all Canadian coins. In 1911, the mint began producing nickel 5-cent pieces, which remain in circulation to this day.

During World War I, the Royal Canadian Mint produced copper tokens to be used as substitutes for pennies. These tokens were nicknamed “loonies” because of the image of a loon featured on one side. In 1937, the mint began producing aluminum coins, which were lighter and more durable than previous coins.

In 1967, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the first paper-based currency in Canada: the $1 and $2 bills. These bills were replaced by plastic currency in 2011. In 1979, the mint began producing the $1 coin, which is also known as a “loonie”. The $2 coin, or “toonie”, was introduced in 1996.

Over time, the Ottawa facility began to reach capacity and had become antiquated, so in 1972 an additional facility in Winnipeg was constructed. The Winnipeg facility currently produces all of Canada’s circulation coins. In 1984, the mint also began producing medals, coins and medallions for other countries.

Throughout its history, the Royal Canadian Mint has won numerous awards for its high-quality coins. In 2006, the mint was honoured with the World Coin Award for its silver $5 coin, which commemorated the centennial of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. In 2012, the mint won the award for “Best Silver Coin” from the International Association of Currency Affairs for its 25-cent coin, which featured a holographic image of a sugar maple leaf.
