About the Gold Britannia
Gold Britannias have premiums competitive with other gold bullion coins like Krugerrands and Philharmonics. Since January 1, 2000, the VAT Act 1994 exempts investment grade gold bullion sold by the Royal Mint from VAT taxes. This keeps domestic purchases of gold strong, which prevents the need to discount prices in foreign markets to make up for weaker domestic consumption as we see with silver Britannias. Gold Britannias do carry a reasonable premium over spot and the price tends to fluctuate very closely with the spot price of gold. They do not typically carry a numismatic premium that increases the overall price, although there are specific year Britannias and commemorative Britannias that carry higher premiums for their collectible value.
