Spanish Gold Doubloon Coins
The word “doubloon” comes from the Latin root “duplus,” which means double, and in this case, it refers to the value being worth twice as much as a standard escudo. In Spain, their currency for silver is called “reales,” while gold is called “escudos.” Minted in 1.5, 2, 4, and 8 denominations, these coins were issued in genuine silver and gold until 1833.
History of the Doubloon
Doubloons are most often associated with pirate treasure. While they certainly were used by pirates, these unique coins were originally used as currency from the mid-16th century until the mid-19th century, primarily by Spain, Nueva Granada (Peru), and New Spain. Made from 22-karat gold, the coins came in various sizes ranging from 6 to 8 grams. Doubloons grew in popularity in Europe, eventually reaching France, Switzerland, Germany, and Prussia.
The doubloon inspired many European currencies: the French Louis d'or, the Italian doppia, the Swiss duplone, the Northern German pistole, and the Prussian Friedrich d'Or. In Portugal, the doubloons continued to be minted under the name “dobrão.”
Today, gold doubloons are rare and highly valuable. Original doubloons from Spain and Portugal are among the hardest to find, but collectors and enthusiasts continue to search for these elusive and unique gold coins. Many precious metals dealers sell gold doubloons in sets, even jewelry, as the design is unique and attractive.
