How to Tell if Your Item is Gold or Silver

gold ring

How to determine the purity of your gold

You can find the hallmarks on your items to help you determine their value. Rings have their hallmark on the inside of the band, chains and necklaces usually have it located near or on the clasp, bracelets also have the markings on the clasp or inside of the band and on earrings the hallmark is usually stamped on the post or back of the earring. You want to look for markings like 585, 750 or 999 which indicate the gold content. 999 is 24 karat while 585 indicates 14 karat gold. You can also look for a sponsor mark from the maker, refiner or manufacturer.

Determining the purity of silver

The markings can be found in the same location on your jewelry as gold, but will typically be marked with 800, 825, 830 or 850 if it is continental silver indicating its varying silver content. Silver plate which has minimal silver content will be marked with EP or EPNS. Sterling silver will show a 925 marking indicating it is 92.5% pure. Anything marked 900 indicates 90% purity.

Do you know the level or gold or silver content?

The karat that your item is translated to the % of precious metal in the piece of jewelry. 24 karat jewelry is 99.9% pure or 0.999 fine while 14 karat jewelry contains 58.5% pure gold. The value of your item is determined by the metal content making determining the karat very important in estimating the value of your item.

Frequently Asked Questions

Appraisal Process

How does the appraisal process work?
Begin by requesting a free appraisal kit. Once we receive your items, our expert team will evaluate them and send you an online quote.
How do you determine the value of my items?
We consider purity (karats), weight (grams or pennyweight), and current spot market price. Testing includes electronic, XRF analysis, and acid tests. Value is based on gold content, excluding stones or other materials.
How long does the process take?
Processing usually takes 1–2 days after we receive your items. During peak times, processing may take longer.
Will I be notified when you receive my items?
Yes, you’ll receive an email notification once we receive your items and again when the evaluation is complete.
What if I decide not to sell after the appraisal?
You may request that your items be returned to you. Gemstones and Diamonds will not be returned due to required removal during the appraisal process. We highly suggest you remove any valued part of your jewelry or item(s) before sending them to be appraised.

Eligible Items

What types of items can be sold?
We accept jewelry, silverware, dental crowns, coins, bullion, rounds, and bars in 8–24K gold.
Can I sell broken jewelry?
Yes. Value is based on metal purity and weight, not condition.
Can I sell gemstones or diamonds?
We only pay for gold/silver content. Remove any stones you want to keep before sending. We cannot return gems or diamonds.
Can I sell dental fillings?
Yes, we buy dental fillings. We are happy to test your items to determine the metal content, then make you an offer. To note all dental fillings are made from dental alloy. They can be high noble alloys (precious metal), noble alloys (semi-precious metal) or non-noble (non-precious metal). The composition is determined based on several factors. Pure gold is not used because it is too soft and will have wear and shape changes if used for dental purposes. High-noble dental alloys that appear yellow can have a gold content that varies between 64-77% gold. It often also contains Silver, Palladium, Platinum, copper and sometimes includes Indium, Iridium and zinc. Silver appearing dental is typically 48% gold and 40% palladium. Noble alloys or semi-precious metal contain at least 25% noble metal content and are usually comprised of 20% gold or mainly palladium and silver.
Do you purchase unprocessed gold?
No. We only accept refined items (jewelry, coins, bars, etc.). No nuggets or gold-bearing rocks.
Can I sell coins, bullion, or bars?
