- Why Buy Silver
The character and spirit of the country was revealed on Canada's first circulating Silver dollar in 1935. This remarkable design of the untamed frontier has made its way back in circulation as a $5 legal tender bullion coin.
Canada’s first circulating Silver dollar was introduced in 1935 to mark the Silver Jubilee celebrations for King George V. Its design featured a voyageur and native person paddling a canoe in tribute to the fur trade; the industry that founded the nation—and the image of a vast untamed frontier it conveyed made it one of the most popular coins.
Coin Highlights:
- Contains 1 oz of .9999 fine Silver.
- This is the highest denomination made available on a one oz Silver legal tender bullion coin.
- Single coins come in protective packaging. Multiples of 25 come in plastic tubes. Multiples of 500 come in monster boxes.
- Features a visible micro-engraved security maple leaf featuring ‘17’ in the center of the leaf.
- Eligible for Precious Metals IRAs.
- Obverse: Susanna Blunt’s design of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the $5 face value and the year 2017.
- Reverse: Depicts an image of a canoe carrying furs with a voyager paddling at the stern and an aboriginal paddling at the bow.
- Guaranteed by the Royal Canadian Mint.

Largely unchanged from the design that appeared on Canadian silver dollars from 1935 to 1986, the “Voyageur” image by sculptor and artist Emanuel Hahn is a powerful nod to Canada’s early history and its reputation as an untamed frontier during the fur trade era.
In the center of the coin's reverse is where a canoe moves swiftly past the wind-swept pines that dot a semi-circular island. A voyageur paddles at the stern, while an Aboriginal paddles at the bow; between them, a bundle of wrapped furs are marked “HB” for Hudson’s Bay Company, while stylized vertical rays above represent the aurora borealis lighting up the sky.

I have only been collecting silver coins for a little over a year, so I do not have any of the original canoe coins that others mention. However, the minute I saw these, I had to make a purchase. The attention to detail on the engraving is excellent and the design in general is quite attractive. The purchase price was good (low premium) and I feel these make a great addition to my portfolio.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

These are beautifully designed, beautifully struck coins and definitely worth looking at if you were already planning to buy some Silver Maples for your stack. If you already have some of the original Voyageurs, even better. I gave 4 stars because these are aftermarket (probably why APMEX’s premium is so low for these). Mine were broken seal (no big deal), with no marks on the faces, but rim dings (still a minor deal, but not perfect). Buy with this in mind if you’re a perfectionist (I’m not, but your mileage may vary).
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Collectible (lower mintage)
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

This coin is lovely to look at. It reminds me of the best of the Canadian coins, the coins that really stick with you like the '67 Flying Goose dollar or the '67 Howling Wolf Half Dollar, or another '67 gem the Running Bobcat and at long last Canada isn't complete without a reference to the '65 Beaver. This coin, to my mind, captures all the other lovely coins Canada has produced about its flora and fauna in one coin.
- Pros
- Value (low premium over spot)
- Attractive Design
- Mint Condition
- Recognized Brand
- Bottom Line
- Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
