To symbolize the continuity of the dynasty, the equestrian portraits of Philip III and Queen Margaret of Austria, the parents of Philip IV, were arranged on the west wall of the Salon de Reinos, while on the opposite wall were those of Philip IV and his wife, Isabel de Bourbon. That of his heir, Price Baltasar Carlos, was placed between the two over a door, which explains the proportions of the horse, painted to be seen from below. Baltasar Carlos, Philip IV's longed for first son, is shown with a general's staff of command, indicating his readiness to take up the reins of monarchy. His early death was to prevent him from doing so.
