About the Meatball Logo
The well-known meatball logo is one of the most recognized and popular logos in marketing. It was first designed by James Modarelli for NASA's Aviation Capital Development Division in 1959, depicting new frontiers into space with a globe that symbolizes Earth, stars beyond our atmosphere, and an orbiting craft. The meatball logo wasn't originally named as such, but rather as the "worm." It was only in 1975 that NASA adopted a more contemporary logo, choosing the retro worm design.
