About Retro Worm Logo
The NASA logo has been around for nearly half a century and remains widely recognized. The "worm" design, which features an illustration of Earth layered over itself in red with wiggling white tendrils reaching up toward the sky, was created by Richard Danne and Bruce Blackburn when they were students in 1974. Their now-famous design was used from 1975 until 1992 to bring a modern look to replace the circular blue, white and red insignia previously used. There has been talk of the “return of the worm” in recent years, but for now the insignia is only used for special occasions and commercial merchandising purposes.
