About Lake Superior Agate
Minnesota is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes and actually has around 12,000 lakes of over 10 acres or more, the most of any contiguous state. The largest lake to fall partially within the state is Lake Superior and thus, the official state gemstone of Minnesota is the Lake Superior agate. Formed during lava eruptions that occurred in Minnesota about a billion years ago, the stone's predominant red color comes from iron, a major Minnesota industrial mineral found extensively throughout the Iron Range region.
