Marcus Tullius Cicero and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
Marcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman lawyer, politician, philosopher and skeptic who lived from 106 BC to 43 BC. He was best known for his abundant writing and opinions on everything from philosophy to politics and rhetoric. Cicero is regarded as one of Rome’s most famous orators and prose stylists and is credited with lifting up Latin to be used in the academic sphere.

The brilliant thinker was a lawyer and politician during his life, and he was an essential person in many historic moments of the Roman Empire. For example, he contributed to ending an unsuccessful coup and later, during Julius Caesar’s tumultuous rule, Cicero recommended a return to a customary style of republican government.

Cicero’s philosophy and republican stance inspired the Founding Fathers of the United States. Thomas Jefferson is even recorded as expressing that Cicero was one of the few primary historical people that he drew from when drafting the Declaration of Independence.
