According to Aztec legend, these mountains represent two tragic lovers. Princess Iztaccíhuatl and the warrior Popocatépetl were deeply devoted to one another. Before allowing their marriage, the princess’s father required Popocatépetl to defeat a rival enemy. While the warrior was away in battle, false news of his death reached the princess, and she died from grief. When Popocatépetl returned victorious and discovered what had happened, the gods transformed the two into mountains so they could remain together forever.
