Dove of Peace
Jerusalem, whose Hebrew name means "City of Peace," shares a long association with the image of the dove. The symbol first gained prominence in the biblical account of Noah’s Ark in Genesis 8:11, when a dove returned carrying an olive branch, marking the end of divine judgment and the start of a renewed covenant with humanity. Over centuries, the dove appeared frequently in both Christian and Hebrew writings and can also be seen in early Roman catacomb art.
In Christian iconography, the dove later came to represent the Holy Spirit. Islamic tradition also connects the bird to divine revelation, with accounts that it whispered the words of God into the ear of Muhammad. Over time, the dove’s meaning broadened and it became a widely recognized symbol of peace across cultures, continuing to represent hope for a more peaceful future.
