About Wisconsin
In the north woods of Wisconsin, clear, clean lakes abound. Fishing is fine, and wildlife is plentiful. Outdoor recreation and adventure is a main draw for out-of-state visitors. 15,000 lakes are enjoyed by swimmers, fishermen and boaters. The deep, cool woods provide wonderful hiking and horseback riding trails.

Below the wooded north country lies “America's Dairy Land," where cows are king. Wisconsin's dairy farms lead the United States in the production of milk, cheese and butter, providing 40% of the nation's cheese and 20% of its butter.

One of Wisconsin’s historical nicknames is the “Copper State” in reference to the many copper mines found in the northern part of the state. Copper is one of the few metals that can occur in nature in a directly usable metallic form (native metals). This led to very early human use in several regions from circa 8000 BC. Thousands of years later, it was the first metal to be smelted from sulfide ores, c. 5000 BC, the first metal to be cast into a shape in a mold, c. 4000 BC and the first metal to be purposefully alloyed with another metal, tin, to create bronze, c. 3500 BC.
